What is Shingles Vaccine?
Shingles Vaccine is a vaccine that helps protect against shingles, a painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus. This is the same virus that causes chicken pox. Even if you have had chickenpox years ago, the virus could stay in your body and become active again which can cause shingles at a later age.
Shingles Vaccine trains your immune systems to recognize and fight the virus that causes shingles before it can cause an outbreak. It uses just a part of the virus, not the whole virus, to safely create a strong defence in your body without making you sick.
How It Works
Shingles Vaccine is given in two doses, with the second shot usually given 2 to 6 months after the first dose. It is recommended for people aged 50 and older and those with weaker immune systems. The vaccine lowers your chance of getting shingles and also helps prevent post herpetic neuralgia (PHN), a type of long-lasting nerve pain that can follow a shingles outbreak.
After receiving both doses of the vaccine, your body builds up protection that stays active for years. This helps stop the virus from waking up inside your body and spreading along the nerves, which is what causes the painful rash and possible nerve damage.
