What is Bone Graft?
Bone graft is a transplant of bone tissue to support damaged bone caused by trauma, gum diseases or infection. If you have lost a tooth and the gap is left for a long period of time, the bone around the lost tooth can degenerate and needs to be augmented before being able to support a dental implant. In dental terminology, bone graft is viewed as a form of support for dental implants, and it is done to renew bone dimension. Bone grafting is usually conducted under local anesthesia or IV sedation to provide comfort.

Different bone graft materials are designed for different purposes and advantages, the surgeon will make a decision on the material, depending on your needs:

Bone Graft Surgery
This is the procedure where bone tissue material is inserted to the treated area and sometimes additional membrane is placed on. It is important that you share any problems and medical conditions such as allergies and bleeding problems. In the procedure, local anesthesia will be administered.
Membrane
A membrane is a barrier, and its function is to prevent gum from growing into the bone cavity. In many cases, it is placed on top of the bone and under the gum. There are 2 categories for membrane, resorbable and non-resorbable. The doctor will determine which is best for you, depending on your condition.
Sinus Lift Surgery
If you do not have enough bone to place implants, sinus lift surgery can help to correct the problem. It helps to raise the sinus floor and develop bone for dental implants placement. In the procedure, a bony piece will be lifted into the sinus cavity, and the space underneath it will be filled with bone graft material.
To determine how your procedure is going to be or whether it is suitable, the doctor will decide on this after taking into considerations your needs and condition.
Procedure for Bone Graft
1. First Evaluation and Diagnosis
· Oral examination and X-ray will be done to determine if bone grafting is warranted.
· Medical history will be taken. Please ensure you report all of your medical and dental conditions and history.
2. Site Tooth Preparation
· Local anesthesia will be given to numb up the tooth, jawbone and gums.
· Gingival area will be opened.
3. Bone Grafting is done
· Bone tissue material will be inserted and if necessary, additional membrane will be placed.
· Surgical site will be stitched up.
Post-Care for Bone Grafting (Dental Implant)
· Avoid mouthwash or rinsing 6 to 12 hours after surgery
· Do not brush the wound as you brush your teeth
· Complete the course of your prescribed antibiotic medication as directed

A1: Bone grafting is done so that the bone doesn't wither away without a tooth. Bone grafts are important if you consider replacing missing teeth with implants.
Q2: How long after a graft will an implant be placed?
A2: About 6 to 9 months after a graft, implants can be inserted. This allows the previous surgical site to heal fully and also allows new bones to form.
Q3: Is is painful?
A3: Bone grafting is a relatively painless procedure. Mild discomfort may be felt a few days after surgery but this can be countered by prescribed medications.
Q4: Can I return to my normal work schedule after surgery?
A4: It would be best if you could take a few days off to handle the post surgical issues. However, if your condition is not severe, you may return to work the very next day.
