What is Dental Veneer?

Dental veneers are a common option for people who want to improve their smile. Veneers are thin shells that are placed over the front of the existing teeth to improve appearance. It is an ideal choice for teeth that have uneven surfaces, are too big or too small, chipped teeth, crooked teeth or teeth with small holes in them. Veneers can create a pleasing aesthetic and are also durable so you can enjoy fully-functional teeth.

There are 2 types of veneers: composite and porcelain. As in the name, porcelain veneers are made from porcelain while composite veneers are made from tooth-colored resin.

Composite Veneer

Composite veneer, also known as direct veneer, is made from composite resin, a tooth-colored material that is also used in dental bonding. It can build a new outer layer to cover surface of the teeth.

Porcelain Veneer (IPS Esthetic)

IPS Empress Esthetic offers aesthetically outstanding porcelain veneer. It looks natural and it is also durable. Various powders are mixed with IPS Empress ingots to create life-like and natural looking veneer.

Porcelain Veneer (IPS eMax)

This type of veneer has been known to offer natural-looking and aesthetically pleasing finish for dental veneer. It is made of cement material that delivers the ultimate in metal free aesthetics and strength. This type is recommended for difficult combination cases.

Super Thin Veneer

This contact-lens thin veneers are placed over teeth surfaces for color shades change and slight shape adjustments. In some cases, this type does not require tooth preparation.

Dental Veneer Procedure

1. First Evaluation and bonding tooth preparation
· The most matched composite resin color to the teeth will be selected
· Tooth surface will be roughened and condition liquid will be applied to help with adhesion

2. Application of bonding resin
· The composite resin will be applied and molded
· Light will be used to harden the material
· The resin will be trimmed, shaped and polished to match the tooth surface

Composite vs Porcelain Veneer

While both improve the aesthetics of your teeth, porcelain veneers are better than composite veneers in many ways.

<Porcelain veneers>
· are stronger (porcelain is stronger than composite resin)
· last longer
· are more natural-looking (looks like real teeth) and aesthetically pleasing

However, if porcelain veneer is damaged, it would have to be replaced, it cannot be repaired. If composite veneer is chipped, it is possible to repair it.

Advantages and Limitations of Dental Bonding

<Advantages>
· Painless procedure
· Repairs decayed teeth
· Improves appearance of the teeth from chipping, cracked or discoloration
· Covers gaps between the teeth and make teeth look longer

<Limitations>
· The composite resin is susceptible to cracking and chipping especially when patients are prone to teeth grinding
