What Is Porcelain-fused-to Metal Dental Crown?

A Porcelain-fused-to Metal Dental Crown (PFM) offers a reliable and aesthetic solution for restoring damaged teeth. Its metal base provides excellent strength and durability, making it ideal for chewing and long-term use. The porcelain coating mimics the look of natural teeth, helping the crown blend in seamlessly with your smile. PFM Dental Crown is especially beneficial for patients who need both function and appearance, offering a more affordable alternative to all-ceramic crowns. They are suitable for both front and back teeth, combining resilience with a natural look.

At our affiliated clinic, there are 2 options available: Porcelain-fused-to Non Precious Alloy and Porcelain-fused-to Palladium Alloy (Gold 2%).

How It Works

The procedure for getting a Porcelain-fused-to Metal Dental Crown starts with the examination of the tooth along with x-rays. If the tooth has extensive decay or damage, a root canal treatment may be done first. The tooth is then reshaped – either filed down or built up – to create the right structure for supporting the crown. An impression of the prepared tooth is taken using either a traditional mold or a digital intraoral scanner to ensure precision.

This impression is sent to a dental laboratory where the crown is fabricated. The dentist at our affiliated clinic uses advanced equipment to create a strong metal base for durability, then layer tooth-coloured porcelain over it for a natural appearance. While waiting for the final crown, a temporary one is placed to protect the tooth. Once ready, the permanent crown is fitted, adjusted for bite and colour, and securely bonded using dental cement. A curing light is used to harden the bond, completing the restoration.
