It Is Suitable For

· Those in Bangkok looking to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
· Those who want to improve vision but are not eligible for LASIK or PRK.
· Those who want to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
· Those who wish to achieve stable vision with a reversible procedure.
· Those who wish to avoid corneal tissue removal or laser reshaping.

What Is ICL Surgery?

Implantable Collamer Lens, known in short as ICL Surgery, is a vision correction procedure that places a thin, flexible Collamer lens inside the eye, positioned between the iris and the natural lens. Unlike LASIK or PRK, ICL does not reshape the cornea. Instead, it adds a corrective lens that works together with the eye’s natural optics to provide clear, sharp vision.

The Collamer lens is made of a collagen-based biocompatible material that is lightweight, flexible, and hydrophilic, allowing nutrients and oxygen to pass through safely. This lens stays permanently inside the eye unless removal is ever required – making the procedure reversible and suitable for patients with dry eyes, thin corneas, or prescriptions too high for laser surgery. ICL offers rapid visual improvement, excellent night vision, and long-term stability, making it a popular alternative to laser-based refractive surgeries.

How It Works

ICL Surgery corrects refractive errors by implanting a pre-measured Collamer lens inside the eye. After numbing and dilating the eye with medicated drops, the doctor at our affiliated hospital creates a very small incision at the corneal edge. Through this micro-incision, the folded lens is inserted and gently positioned behind the iris but in front of the natural crystalline lens.

Once placed, the lens unfolds naturally and begins to redirect light accurately onto the retina, correcting issues such as myopia or astigmatism. Since there is no corneal tissue being removed, the structural integrity of the eye remains intact, making the procedure suitable for patients who cannot undergo LASIK or PRK. The incision is small enough to heal without sutures, and vision improvement is often noticeable within hours.

ICL Surgery Procedure

1. Consultation and eye examination will be conducted.
2. Measurements of corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth, and cell count will be performed.
3. Eyes will be dilated and numbed.
4. A micro-incision will be created.
5. The Collamer lens will be folded and inserted into the eye.
6. Lens positioning will be adjusted, and eye drops will be prescribed.
7. Post-care instructions will be provided.

FAQ

Q1: Is ICL Surgery better than LASIK?
A1: ICL Surgery is not necessarily “better”, but it is a suitable alternative for those who cannot undergo LASIK or PRK due to thin corneas, high prescriptions, or other eye conditions. Both procedures are effective, but ICL may offer clearer vision immediately and lower risk of dry eye.

Q2: How long does ICL lens last?
A2: The ICL lens is designed to last a lifetime. It can be removed or replaced if your prescription changes or if cataracts develop, without causing structural damage to your eye.

Q3: Is ICL Surgery painful?
A3: The procedure is generally painless. Your eyes are numbed with medicated drops, and you may receive a mild sedative for relaxation. Most patients feel minimal discomfort during the surgery.

Q4: Can ICL Surgery change eye colour?
A4: No, ICL Surgery does not change your eye colour. The lens is placed behind the iris and in front of the natural lens, so it does not affect the visible colour of your eyes.

Q5: Can ICL Surgery be done twice?
A5: Yes, it can be repeated if needed. The implanted lens can be removed or replaced in cases of prescription changes or having other eye conditions. However, this is usually rare.
